Spanish Supreme Court bans bull torture

The Spanish Supreme Court has recently delivered a historic verdict banning all activities relates to bull torture at the “Toro de la Vega” festival, thus saving countless animals from great suffering.

“Toro de la Vega” festival was a tradition for men to stab young bulls with spears at the festival in Castilla y León for almost 500 years.

As a result of the pressure put on by Spanish animal welfare organizations such as PACMA and PETA on those responsible, in 2016, the regional government of Castilla y León banned the stabbing of bulls at the festival. But shortly after this groundbreaking decision, Tordesillas City Council appealed to the Supreme Court. Allegedly, there was no reason to prohibit the killings.

This time the Spanish Supreme Court has dismissed the appeal and put an end to the almost 500-year-old animal torture tradition once and for all. The bulls are not only tortured with arrows and spears on the celebration but finally also stabbed. Before that, the tail is cut off alive. In the end, the city council gave the person who killed the suffering animal a ceremonial spear and a medal.

This success is an important milestone in the context of a far-reaching movement that is spreading throughout Spain. More and more people do not want to attend festivals and other events where bulls are tortured in the name of entertainment. Over 100 cities have already banned bullfights. According to a survey, 80% of Spaniards are against these cruel events.

It’s great that more and more cities and regions are banning bullfighting events. But there are still countless bulls suffering for human entertainment. In the case of the so-called “fire bull”, for example, a bull is poured over its head with bad luck and set on fire. Please take part in our call for action against this cruelty to animals.

The Chinese also do horrific things to animals. Especially men to hunting dogs that fail them. Hanging them by their necks on their tippy toes so that when they get tired, they suffocate themselves. What a long agonizing horrific torture. I Hate How CRUEL the human species can be!

Until you go vegan you contribute to the slaughter of innocent lives. The dairy industry sells male calves to slaughter for veal and the females are made milk machines that are raped annually to get them pregnant, then the baby is taken so omnis and vegetarians can steal the milk. Chickens unable to move in their environment, beaks cut off as chicks, male chicks in hatcheries suffocated and ground up alive in macerators. Only thing worse than an omnivore is a vegetarian. Omnis are honest. Vegetarians are delusional. Vegetarians are still responsible for the suffering.

Second, the only thing that was banned (and which the Supreme Court uphelded now ), was the killing of the bull with lances, but the bull has continued to be chased by the villagers, continued to be exhausted, and continue to be killed (but with a gun now rather than a lance), and the Supreme Court has ruled that all this should continue… Read more »

There is a way to have humane bullfighting. Instead of stabbing it and torturing it, the bull is encouraged with pheromones from a female cow in estrus. When the bull is too tired to keep running at the matador, or chases the matador out, then the “fight” is over. This way, the animal is not stabbed or tortured. Nothing pierces its skin. It just runs at the person with the cape until its tired or it gets its horns into the person. Still dangerous for the human, but safe for the animal. Once it’s over, the animal is lead away,… Read more »

At least that would be fair. I know someone will say the bull might not want to play that game, but if people are dumb enough to risk getting wounded, and others will pay to watch, as long as the animal is not harmed, fine with me. Obvious to anyone with compassion, is the horrific ordeal the tortured bulls endure. The less obvious effect is the psychological damage that is done to the humans who participate or witness these public atrocities. They become conditioned to believe that animals are simply inanimate objects without feelings or value. This facilitates the perpetuation of these hateful practices. So, why aren’t the religious leaders of Spain standing up to end this ignorance?

Bullfighting is truly horrific — a companion on a trip to Mexico City insisted we attend, and I reluctantly did. The horror was compounded by the first bulldeath (leg-flopping upside-down corpse dragged off by a blindfolded horse) being immediately followed by a fresh bull charging into the ring, and then another and then another, I don’t remember how many. The horror was further compounded by my beginning to feel faint stirrings of interest, and bloodlust—no one is immune! I didn’t succumb, but I became just a little less judgmental of those who have.
